Are there fewer beds in the new Windsor-Essex Hospitals System than there are in the current system? No. The new system will have the same number of beds as the current system, with room to expand.

if we do not have enough beds currently, why is the plan to build the same amount and think we will not need more beds in the future, why not build more beds into new hospital to alleviate expansion in the future which is more than probable. city is growing and the population is aging so this option of the same amount of beds currently will obviously not be sufficient to meeting our future needs.
Hi David, thanks for the question. If opened today, the new system will have the same number of acute care beds as the current system, with room to expand based on population, demand and support with the Erie St. Clair LHIN and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. That means the physical space will be there to accommodate more beds as demand increases, pending approval from the Ministry. Please refer to information in the following post for more details.https://windsorhospitalsblog.org/2016/02/02/beds-beds-and-beds/
This doesn’t answer many questions, like how do they expect people who depend on public transportation to get out there.
Are the existing hospitals going to be demolished?
If the urgent care is at the Grace site, that’s at the west end of the city. What about those living at the east end, again using public transport.
Hi Adele,
The City of Windsor and County of Essex have guaranteed that by the time the new hospital opens, public transit will be available to the new hospital site. Those living on the east end will be able to take public transit to either the new state-of-the-art hospital or the Urgent Care Centre as they could do to access either of the two acute care campuses.
As part of the plan, both of the current hospitals will be demolished. The Met Campus site will be transferred to the City of Windsor in exchange for the Grace site, where the Urgent Care Centre will be built. A new facility will be built on the Ouellette Campus that will house outpatient mental health care and chronic pain management. In addition, Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare is working on a plan to host a community hub with other agencies on this site. The parking garage at the Ouellette Campus will remain.
Thank you for your interest. Much more information about this plan can be found at http://www.windsorhospitals.ca
Excellent…..good explanation and certainly should quiet any objections by the nay-sayers! We need to proceed with this project and cannot afford any costly delays. Let’s get it done!
